Iqaluit, Nunavut, July 30 2024 – The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) would like to inform residents of Kinngait and Kimmirut that quarry assessments will take place at Kangiqsukutaaq and Tatsittut, located between the communities of Kinngait and Kimmirut on August 30, 2024.

There may be temporary disruptions in accessing the quarries during this time as the assessment teams will be flying into the sites by helicopter.

The purpose of this assessment is to develop recommendations for improving public safety and to increase access to carving stone for individuals that frequent the quarry sites.

QIA is committed to ensuring the safety of the public and will be working to identify opportunities for safe access to the quarry materials. A summary of the quarry assessment will be presented to the communities, to the QIA Community Lands and Resources Committee and QIA Board of Directors for further consideration.

Staff at QIA have been working towards ensuring the safety of Inuit on Inuit Owned Lands.  Most recently this work has involved conducting cabin inspections in the Iqaluit and Clyde River areas and planning for cabin inspections around Pond Inlet and Sanirajak.

We would like to thank Qikiqtani Inuit for their understanding and cooperation while the assessment takes place.
