Today, The Qikiqtani Inuit Association would like to recognize the 5th Anniversary of the QTC Apology delivered by the Federal Government on August 14, 2019. In the 5 years since the historic apology QIA has been hard at work fulfilling the promise of Saimaqatigiingniq.

This year QIA would like to focus on a specific aspect of the QTC, by highlighting recommendation #3: “The QIA and the RCMP should formally recognize the contributions of Inuit Special Constables and their families to the work of the RCMP in the region.”

Honoring History: The Inuit Special Constable and Qimmiq Monument

In 2020, a significant project was initiated to honor the invaluable contributions of Inuit Special Constables and their loyal Qimmiit. Despite the global pandemic halting progress, the dedication and resilience of those involved ensured the project’s completion.

On December 2, 2021, the Inuit Special Constable and Qimmiq monument was unveiled in front of the RCMP V Division Headquarters in Iqaluit. This monument stands as a testament to the crucial role the Inuit Special Constables played in supporting the RCMP and their communities, particularly through the harsh conditions of the Arctic.

The Significance of the Inuit Special Constables

Inuit Special Constables were instrumental in guiding and assisting the RCMP officers, utilizing their extensive knowledge of the land and survival skills. Qimmiit were not just companions but vital partners, providing transportation and assistance in search and rescue operations, and ensuring the safety and success of numerous missions.

The Monument and Plaque

The monument itself is a striking tribute, featuring a detailed sculpture of an Inuit Special Constable alongside a Qimmiq sled dog. The plaque accompanying the monument provides a poignant reminder of their contributions and the deep bond shared between the constables and their dogs.
