The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) today announced the hiring of Sandy Kownak to the position of Director of Social Policy. Her employment with QIA will be effective October 22, 2012.

“With Mrs. Kownak’s extensive connections and intimate knowledge of the social issues challenging Nunavut, I am delighted to welcome her to QIA. Her experience will be of tremendous benefit to QIA,” said Executive Director Navarana Beveridge.

Mrs. Kownak previously worked with the federal government’s Department of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development where she was acting director of Intergovernmental and Inuit Affairs division. While there she supervised the delivery of education, social, and capacity building programs. Prior to her time with the federal government she held a number of positions with Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (NTI), including serving as a policy analyst in the Social and Cultural Department.
