QIA Welcomes New Board Members
January 30, 2025 – Iqaluit, Nunavut – The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) welcomed the Board of Directors in Iqaluit this week with the first meeting of the year.
This was also the first meeting for newly elected members of the QIA Board: Kataisee Attagutsiak of Arctic Bay, Larry Audlaluk of Grise Fiord, Billy Etooangat of Pangnirtung, Rosemary Metuq of Qikiqtarjuaq, Sarah Salluviniq of Resolute Bay and Adamee Itorcheak of Iqaluit, who is the newly elected Secretary Treasurer.
Two new Executive Members were selected by their peers this week, Solomon Allurut of Sanirajak and Peter Ivalu of Igloolik. Portfolios were redistributed and an orientation of the organization and current QIA files took place.
An updated Community Lands And Resources Committee (CLARC) Manual was presented for amendment, more specifically to incorporate the Community Resources and Opportunities feature was introduced through the Revenue Allocation Policy to ensure that a portion of QIA’s revenues are directed specifically to benefit each Qikiqtani community. The purpose of this initiative is to empower Qikiqtani communities by giving them the opportunity to determine how these funds will be used to address locally identified needs and opportunities.
Each CLARC will be responsible for making decisions on how their funds will be spent within their communities. They will have several options, including, but not limited to:
- Expanding existing QIA programs, such as the Qikiqtani Cultural Activities Program;
- Requesting new programs tailored to their community’s needs;
- Developing and delivering their own community-led initiatives, or;
- Saving funds for up to three years for future projects.
The QIA is excited to see lively discussions this week and we look forward to the work to take place this year.
