QIA Welcomes Back Successful Bowhead Whale Hunters to Iqaluit

 In Media Releases

Iqaluit, Nunavut – Iqaluit hunters caught a bowhead whale this past Monday, the first for the community in over 100 years.

“On behalf of Inuit in the Qikiqtani region, I congratulate the Amarok Hunters and Trappers Association as we celebrate this historic occasion with pride” said QIA President, Okalik Eegeesiak. “To witness Inuit prepare for the hunt for the bowhead
here in Nunavut’s capital was very special.”

Meat and maktak from the whale is being shared within and outside the community and is bringing great joy among young and old alike.

In symbolism of the successful hunt, a group of Inuit sang a Scottish whaling song for the hunters to celebrate and praise them of this momentous feat.

A feast is being planned on the weekend in honour of the great hunt and is expected to draw a healthy crowd.
