Today, the Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Nunavut Arctic College that paves the way for collaborative efforts in training and research, bringing innovative education opportunities directly to Inuit in the High Arctic. This means more learning opportunities, closer to home, for Inuit.
At the heart of this initiative is QIA’s Inuit Research and Training Centre in Pond Inlet, set to open in 2026. This first-of-its-kind facility in the High Arctic will serve as a beacon of opportunity, making education and training more accessible throughout Inuit Nunangat. The Centre will empower Inuit to actively learn new skills, take part in important research, and receive the education and training needed for good jobs in a changing economy.
In collaboration with Nunavut Arctic College, the MOU sets the groundwork for new and innovative program delivery at the Research and Training Centre. The new facility will offer training in important areas such as the conservation economy, Inuit governance, mining, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, and research and innovation.
In the future, it is envisioned the Centre will offer university-level programs and training in areas like medicine, engineering, and technology—in-demand fields where we need more Inuit workers.
QIA is inviting universities, institutions and organizations to partner with us to deliver higher education opportunities. The more we work together, the more opportunities we can create for Inuit-led research, training, and education.
The MOU with Nunavut Arctic College is just the beginning. Together, we are building a strong future where Inuit lead the way in education and economic growth.
The $34 million Research and Training Centre is made possible through funding from the Mary River Project, Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency, Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation, Indigenous Services Canada, Natural Resources Canada, and Nunavut Tunngavik Inc.
These investments reflect a shared commitment to ensuring Inuit have the resources and opportunities to thrive in their homeland.
Stay tuned for more updates as we bring this exciting vision to life!
