QIA Proud of Nishiyuu Walkers

 In Media Releases

A remarkable journey is coming to an end in Ottawa today and the Qikiqtani Inuit Association joins in with other aboriginal groups from across Canada in celebrating their success.

On January 16 seven Cree Youth left their home community of Great Whale and started a journey that would take 1,600 kilometres to complete. The Journey of Nishiyuu comes to an end with that group of seven having now swelled to nearly 300 people. They are taking their message to Parliament Hill today.

“The updates about the journey posted on Facebook and the pride from across Canada and beyond were a build-up of inspiration and awe,” said President Okalik Eegeesiak. “They are deeply dedicated youth and I admire their strength and conviction that has kept them going during the past two months. They should be tremendously proud of what they have accomplished.”

The Nishiyuu Walkers was about a spiritual journey as much as it was about raising awareness. They learned navigation, survival and leadership skills. They learned to overcome substance abuse issues and personal loss. They supported the Idle No More movement and that it is time for all aboriginal people to stand united with Canada.
