QIA Mourns the Passing of Philip Paneak

 In Media Releases

Iqaluit, Nunavut, March 24, 2022. The Qikiqtaini Inuit Association (QIA) is saddened to hear about the passing of Philip Paneak.

Philip was a long-standing member of QIA’s Board of Directors, representing the people of Mittimatalik for 5 years. He also served 6 years as QIA’s Chief Negotiator for the Mary River Inuit Impact and Benefit Agreement.

Under his leadership, QIA achieved many precedented setting outcomes for Inuit, including the first royalty agreement in a Nunavut IIBA. He worked tirelessly during the Mary River negotiations to ensure Inuit had an equal opportunity in the workplace and a right to maintaining their hunting and language rights and communities would benefit from the Illagiiktunut Fund.

“As we remember our friend Philip, let us remember his dedication to Inuit and the pride he took in his community and language. Philip was a hard working and humble man that wasn’t shy to have sensitive or difficult conversations, this is something I deeply respected”, said QIA President, Olayuk Akesuk.

In reflecting upon his contributions, it is abundantly clear Philip was a positive force in advancing the Inuit rights and values during his years of service to QIA.

QIA Board members and staff send our sincere condolences to his family.
