Iqaluit, Nunavut, October 2, 2024 – The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) is pleased to announce the 2024 launch of the Qikiqtani Qimuksiqtiit Program (QQP) designed to assist Qikiqtani Inuit with the maintenance of their dog teams.

This program provides funding to Qikiqtani Inuit who are established qimmiit practitioners. The program is part of QIA’s ongoing work towards Saimaqatigiingniq and the Qikiqtani Truth Commission.

“Upon review and evaluation of the three-year pilot project and hearing directly from qimuksiqtiit, the QIA Board of Directors passed a resolution at the General Meeting of Members in 2023, to see this become a permanent program. By supporting established qimuksiqtiit and hearing the positive effect of the funds, we knew we were going in the right direction with revitalizing dog teaming practices” said QIA President, Olayuk Akesuk.

Qikiqtani Inuit who have five dogs or more can apply for the funding, including those who applied in previous years. The application can be accessed on the QIA website https://www.qia.ca/applications/qikiqtani-qimuksiqtiit-project/ or completed with assistance from your local Community Liaison Officer or, by calling 867-975-8377.

The deadline for the Qikiqtani Qimuksiqtiit Program is December 31, 2024. Successful applicants will receive funding by January 31, 2025.
