QIA congratulates NTI on court victory

 In Media Releases

The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) congratulates Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) in their successful court challenge for one part of their lawsuit against the federal government pertaining to the implementation of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement, particularly Article 23. The Nunavut Court of Justice ruled in NTI’s favour in their argument that the Government of Canada failed to create a Nunavut General Monitoring Plan, as required by the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement.

“This is a significant legal victory for NTI and a reminder to the Government of Canada of the importance of following the NLCA. QIA urges the federal government to step up to the plate and respect the court’s ruling and, especially commit to work with Inuit in the implementation of the land claims to its fullest potential,” said President Okalik Eegeesiak. “I congratulate all the hard working staff at NTI that made this victory possible.”

The court awarded NTI a summary judgement of $14.8 million. This judgement represents only one part of NTI’s lawsuit against the federal government. Challenges to the federal governments’ implementation of Inuit employment and government contracting continue to move forward.
