Iqaluit, Nunavut, March 7, 2024- The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) concluded their Board of Directors meeting today. There were a number of resolutions passed during this meeting, the main ones include:
- Approval to allow Kakivak Association to enter into an agreement with NCC Development to start construction of the Sanirajak Childcare Facility
- Approval to fulfill an additional $1 million of a $5 million pledge made to the Inuit Heritage Trust. With this decision, $3.5 million of the $5 million pledge to IHT to support the building of the cultural center will be met to date.
- Approval to amend a June 2023 resolution from the board to engage QBDC as the Project Manager and for QIA to seek a developer to complete the Affordable Housing project by March 31, 2029
- Approval to support the advancement of the Iqaluit Nukkiksautiit Project, led by Nunavut Nukkiksautiit Corporation in phase 3 of their development
- Approval of the 2024-2025 fiscal year budget as presented by the Finance Committee
- Approval of a 3% increate to QIA salaries to give appropriate consideration to the continuing high cost of living in Nunavut
- Approval to amend the election regulations, for when the nomination documents must be submitted. This change means that nomination papers must be submitted 4 weeks prior to the election day
- Approval to the signing of the Amendment Agreement for the Baffin National Parks IIBA, allowing for its renegotiation consistent with the proposed amendments.
There were also nominations to the following boards: Nunavummi Disability Makinnasuaqtiit Society (Noah Papatsie), Nunavut Planning Commission (Ben Kovic), Inuit Broadcasting Corporation (Laura Nauyuk), Kakivak Grants and Loans Appeals Committee (Norman Mike). No nominations were received for the Qausuittuq National Park Joint Planning Management Committee or the Kimmirut Territorial Park Joint Planning Management Committee, therefore will be readvertised.
