Iqaluit, Nunavut, June 1, 2023 – The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) concluded their Board Meetings today. There were a number of resolutions passed this week, which include:

  • Approval to support the Qikiqtaaluk Fisheries Corporation’s application to Nunavut Tunngavik Inc.’s Inuit Development Fund for $2 million dollars of additional funding for the purchase of Saputi II
  • Approval for  the creation of investment policies to guide short-term, medium-term and long-term investments
  • Approval to authorize an allocation of $134.7 million for the purpose of developing an affordable rental housing project in each Qikiqtani Community
  • Appointment of new members to The Kakivak Association Board of Directors, appointment of the QIA Women’s and Youth Representatives

The QIA Executive Committee and Board of Directors reconfirmed the importance of achieving fisheries reconciliation agreement(s) as a key component of QIA’s partnership proposal with the Government of Canada related to the Project Finance for Permanence.

The QIA membership also appointed Darlene Willie to the QIA Board of Directors as the interim Community Director for Arctic Bay until the next QIA election in December 2024.  This position became vacant when Jeremy Tunraluk was appointed QIA’s Secretary Treasurer in January 2023
