Iqaluit, Nunavut, October 7, 2022 – The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) today approved by extraordinary resolution to amend and restate the QIA By-Law 06, also known as the QIA Resource Revenue Policy.
QIA’s new Resource Allocation Policy and Legacy Fund Policy will replace the QIA Revenue Policy and Benefits Fund Policy. QIA’s new policies will guide how QIA’s revenues are spent, saved and reported upon.
The two new policies will allow greater flexibility so QIA can adjust spending over time while still ensuring savings are being kept for our future generations. QIA has approved two new areas of spending, Community Resources and Opportunities, and, Economic Diversification.
“Approximately 43 QIA staff participated in engagement sessions in each Qikiqtani Community over the summer to get feedback on the amendment of by-law 06. We heard very clearly from Qikiqtani Inuit that there was a need for change and the kind of support QIA gives. I am excited by the possibilities this will bring to Inuit in the Qikiqtani Region”. said Olayuk Akesuk, President of QIA.
Community engagements took place between June and September of 2022 with participation from Iqaluit staff, elected Community Directors and Community Liaison Officers.
QIA would like to thank the community members in the Qikiqtani Region for their participation and input during this process. For more information on the Resource Revenue Amendments, visit our website: qia.flywheelsites.com/resource-revenue-qas/
