The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) QIA is seeking an On-Site Environmental Monitor to work at the Mary River Mine Project on a 3 weeks on/3 weeks off rotation for 12 hr shifts. Travel to and from the Project will be via charter flights. The Environmental Monitor is tasked with monitoring Baffinland’s activities and associated impacts on the environment. The employee will work with other QIA Environmental Monitors and Baffinland’s Environment Department to implement monitoring programs and will report first-hand observations to QIA. The Environmental Monitors will also report their observations to community members to support their understanding of the Mary River Project.
The Qikiqtani Lands and Resource Management Department oversees activities on Inuit Owned Lands (IOLs) in the Qikiqtani Region of Nunavut. The activities are or may mature into development projects. The department is tasked with achieving the best outcomes for Inuit through responsible land management and monitoring activities. The Environmental Monitors are QIA’s front-line staff responsible for land management and monitoring and report directly to the Manager of Project Compliance.
The Environmental Monitor works on a rotational schedule at the Mary River Project southwest of Mittimatalik, Nunavut. Staff working at the project are flown via charter from their home communities. The position works directly with QIA staff in Iqaluit to monitor activities and their impact on the environment around the Mary River Project. The Environmental Monitor also works with Baffinland’s Environment Department to support the implementation of environmental management plans. The Environmental Monitor improves the flow of information from the Mary River Project to QIA through timely reporting of environmental impacts and responses. This function is critical to the ability of QIA to address and respond to compliance-related issues, requirements and concerns.
The position requires identifying and helping to solve land use problems that will involve both general and environmental compliance with lease and permitting provisions. To do so requires developed competencies in priority setting, deductive reasoning, collaborating with others, predicting impacts and outcomes, and evaluating results. Advice and recommendations should be based upon Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit as well as relevant regulatory tools and laws.
Applicants should have an awareness of the political, social and economic environment of QIA, be knowledgeable of the Nunavut Agreement especially as it pertains to land access, use and environmental protection, have knowledge of applicable territorial and federal environmental legislation. Fluency in Inuktitut is required and a willingness to work rotationally at a fly-in/fly-out mine site.
This position requires a post-secondary diploma in Environmental Technology, Environmental Sciences, or a related discipline. A combination of relevant education and related experience is also an acceptable equivalency. An acceptable Criminal Record Check and a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
The starting salary for this position is $84,604 per annum, plus a Northern Allowance of $27,600 per annum if the employee resides in Nunavut. Housing is not provided.
