Mary River: Phase II Project Change Update

Mary River: Phase II Project Change Update

 In Media Releases

(December 1, 2016, Iqaluit, NU) – Yesterday the Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) received additional information on Baffinland Iron Mine Corporation’s (BIMC) Phase II Project Proposal. This information was requested by the Nunavut Impact Review Board.

QIA recognizes that what the company has currently provided is a summary document and we anticipate receiving additional information regarding the Phase II Project proposal.

We will now initiate a review of the new project information in order to determine next steps. QIA will continue to participate in the regulatory review process.

Our organization looks forward to receiving further direction from the Nunavut Impact Review Board (NIRB) on the information submitted by Baffinland.

“Our focus as always will be on working with communities that may be impacted by the project,” says QIA president P.J. Akeeagok.

“Once we’ve had a chance to review the materials filed, we’ll go back to the communities affected and make sure they’re informed about the proposed changes and get their feedback.”

QIA is eager to meet with Baffinland to learn more about the project, including how these new plans relate to potential benefits and opportunities for Inuit under the Inuit Impact and Benefit Agreement.
