QIA launches permanent program to support Inuit dog team owners
Iqaluit, Nunavut –November 1, 2023– The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) is pleased to announce the launch of the Qikiqtani Qimuksiqtiit Program (QQP) as a permanent program. This program is designed to assist Qikiqtani Inuit with the maintenance of their dog teams and will be available to those that qualify every fiscal year.
This program provides funding to Qikiqtani Inuit who are established qimmiit practitioners and is part of QIA’s ongoing work on the Qikiqtani Truth Commission.
“During the General Meeting of Members last month, board members passed a resolution to make this 3-year pilot project a permanent program of QIA. The success of the pilot project was evident in the feedback and number of applicants received, and we are proud to continue our work towards Saimmaqatigiingniq”, said Liza Ningiuk, Portfolio lead, Qikiqtani Inuit Association.
Qikiqtani Inuit who have five dogs or more can apply for a one-time payment of $3500 for this 2023-2024 fiscal year, including those who applied in previous fiscal years. The application can be accessed on the QIA website or completed with assistance from your local Community Liaison Officer or, by calling 867-975-8400.
The deadline for the application is December 31, 2023. Successful applicants will receive funding by January 31, 2024.
