Recount Completed in QIA Presidential Election

 In Media Releases

The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) today announced the results of the recount for the presidential election that took place on December 12, 2011.

The recount confirmed that Okalik Eegeesiak won the race to fill the president’s position with a final total of 1,042 votes. George Qulaut finished second with 987 votes and Paul Quassa was third with 870 votes.

“Based on the results of the recount, I officially declare Okalik Eegeesiak elected and she will serve as QIA’s President for the next three years, January 1, 2012 thru to December 31, 2014,” said Chief Returning Officer Bob St. Eloi.

The delay in releasing the recount results was due to Christmas holidays and difficulties in transporting a ballot box from Sanikiluaq to Iqaluit.
