The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Stephen Williamson Bathory to the position of Director of its newly created Department of Major Projects. His appointment is effective immediately.

The new department will focus on the Mary River project, the proposed Lancaster Sound National Marine Conservation Area and policy development initiatives.

“QIA is dedicated to these files and is taking steps to be certain that they are handled in the best interest of Qikiqtaaluk beneficiaries. By creating this department, we are committing the necessary focus to ensure these complex files are handled with the required care,” said President Okalik Eegeesiak.

Mr. Williamson Bathory previously worked as QIA’s Director of Lands and Resources. He has worked on many aspects of the Mary River file, including the Inuit Impact and Benefit Agreement, the commercial lease negotiations, the environmental assessment and permitting dating back to 2007. Additionally, Stephen is familiar with the communities in the Qikiqtaaluk and QIA’s approach to resource management. Prior to working with QIA, Stephen held positions with Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada and the Government of Nunavut.
