QIA statement in response to the Nunavut court decision regarding the results of the December 2014 QIA election

The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) received the Nunavut Court of Justice’s decision upholding the results from QIA’s December 2014 election.

In the December 8, 2014 election, Madeleine Redfern lost by one vote for the position of QIA Community Director for Iqaluit.

Ms. Redfern contested the results as well as the official recount and took the matter to court. That matter has now been resolved, with the court siding with QIA.

QIA takes its democratic accountability to Inuit and our elections very seriously. In accordance with our election regulations, an independent Chief Returning Officer is hired to administer elections in order to ensure a fair and democratic process.

Since 2014, QIA has had three successful elections, one full-election and two by-elections. We are also continually working on improving our communications with Inuit to promote elections and foster a higher voter turnout.
