Environmental Monitor Mary River Site Location

QIA is seeking an experienced and highly motivated individual to fill the role of Environmental Monitor Mary River Site. This is a critical role within the Department of Major Projects and for QIA in fulfillment of its strategic objectives to ensure environmental health and safety at the Mary River site. Reporting to the Regulatory Manager, the Environmental Monitor is responsible for overseeing the daily monitoring and reporting concerning the site and providing information of concern and compliance between QIA and Baffinland Iron Mining Corporation (BIMC) for the Mary River Project. This position coordinates all reporting and monitoring activities on behalf of QIA, and serves as the central liaison point between QIA and BIMC with respect to the day-to-day environmental monitoring on site. This position will be required to assess analysis and make recommendations for environmental concerns.
The position requires a diploma or certificate from a post-secondary institution in environmental sciences, land use, engineering or a related discipline. A combination of relevant education and experience may also be deemed acceptable. One year of progressive experience in environmental monitoring would be considered an asset for the potential candidate. Experience working with Nunavut communities, Inuit, Aboriginal associations, the private sector, Federal and/or Territorial government agencies in a monitoring capacity or a related field in Canada’s far north as well as the ability to manage complex and potentially contentious issues while assisting to guide hazard identification processes will also be considered an asset. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications. Highly developed written and verbal communication, and strong presentation skills. Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in Inuktitut is a considerable asset.
This position will be on a rotational basis of two weeks on and two weeks off while working at site.
From time to time when required the candidate may have to work at QIA’s Iqaluit office, carry out community outreach in the impacted community and support the organization and the delivery of Annual Project Review Forum in one of the impacted communities.
